Belgrade

Belgrade, Montana, has positioned itself as a small town worth visiting at the center of the Gallatin Valley. This place has its own distinct identity with a location that gives you all the benefits of Bozeman without the crowds. Just minutes from the airport, 15 minutes to drive to downtown Bozeman, an hour and a half to Yellowstone, and only 20 minutes to the nearest ski hill, Belgrade has that location, location, location you always hear about.

The town itself has its own identity, with restaurants, breweries, watering holes, and all the conveniences you expect from a self-sufficient community. But with a population listed at 7,389 in the 2010 census, you’ll still find that small-town feel that Montana is famous for. Historically, Belgrade was an agricultural town. It was settled in the 1860s, established by settlers looking to get away from the upheaval in the east. Founded on wheat, Belgrade continued to grow as the railroad arrived, for a time shipping out more wheat than any other location between Seattle and Minneapolis.

Today, you’ll find much of that history alive in the historic downtown area, with new development bringing a fresh take to the town. But where does Belgrade fall in the bigger picture?

The Gallatin Valley

The greater Gallatin Valley holds everything an outdoors-minded individual could want in terms of recreation and amenities. At the east edge of the valley, you’ll find Bozeman and the gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Mountain ranges corral the broad river valley, ribboned by the flows of the Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin Rivers that merge to form the Mighty Missouri. This is fly-fishing paradise, with contented skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers just as stoked on the outdoor playground found here. But the region extends farther than the limits of the valley. Here’s what you can find just beyond.

Southwest Montana

The region of Southwest Montana holds some of the best outdoor recreation in the state, with miles of trails, public lands stretching as far as the eye can see, and plenty of dining and shopping options in the metropolis of Bozeman, one of Montana’s largest towns.

As you explore this corner of the state, you’ll find that there’s always more to discover, from ghost towns to caverns, rivers, mountains, and lively communities.
